Visiting Hayao Miyazaki land – day 1

Conglomeration of houses, green moutains with fogg that builds up to clouds lifting up in the sky, friendly faces meeting mine on the ”Shinkansen”super express train from Osaka to Higashi-Hiroshima makes me feel like I’m in a Hayao Miyazaki land. And I am! And it feels exciting!

It´s been 24 hours since my arrival and finally after visiting a big electrical store two times I have been able o conect my computer with the right devicer. Luckily the hotel has rental bikes. I´m here to take part in the INU seminar on Global Citizenship and Peace and will be one of the facilitator for a studentgroup of 10. During a week we will digg into the big and important issue and the theme of this year; Refugee in Global Society. This evening I will meet my student at the Welcome Reception. I’s exciting and I’m looking forward to some company. I’m not used to be on my own like this.

Three ways of using students in student recruitment

1. Involve student ambassadors

Create a team of students, that on a yearly contract interact in social media with prospective students.  Groningenlife is a digital Magazine (website) that show real student Life. Today 28 students are involved and the projectleader is also a student. And they all get paid!

Check it out:

www.groningenlife.com

2. Videos co-created by students and teachers

Encourage students to produce videos about their ideas on how to change things in the future ( pay-off from their motto ” share your talent. Move the world.”) as part of their courses. The films will be presented together on the webbsite and student can vote and nominate the best ideas.

3. Student to student recruitment in international recruitment

A part from an Office with six staff members, Hanze University has a student team with six students; a general coordinator, an online officer EEU, an online officer China, an online coordinator social media, a general assistans and a follow up coordinator. They are in charge of follow up of intro-mails, promotion calls or chatsessions,  telephone calls, application reminders and responding in different socialmedia channels.

In six months they reached 1800 prospective students and personally chatted with 300 of them.

Three challenges we all struggle with

International Staff Training Week is all about sharing knowledge and ideas. What comes in ones mind is that we all – coming from Estonia, Portugal or Switzerland, Scotland or Sweden – share similar challenges regarding marketing and communication issues.

1. Everyone in your organization, other Staff members, academic staff, or management think they know more about marketing and communication than we do.  Even though we work with these questions on a daily basis.

2. Faculty, schools and institutions tend to create their own campaigns and sometime also their own brands. At Hanze University all marketing and communication staff members are part of the same organization reporting to one manager. If an institution or a programme makes an ad or brochure out of context, they will have a call from the Vice Chancellor.

3.  The use of social media among younger people demands Universities to communicate in different ways. This require a new mindset for us working within this field and we have to to broaden our competence to be able to meet the new expectations. Management must understand that the development of a website that connects with new media cost money. Hanze Univeristy are changing plattform to be able to do that.
