Reflections by Nando Sigona on the EU’s refugee situation

Tomorrow we are hosted by Dr Nando Sigona, of the School of Social Policy at the University of Birmingham. He is a sociologist with over ten years research experience in critical migration, refugee and ethnic studies. Exploring the interplay between forms and modes of contemporary membership, governance, and the politics of belonging, Dr Sigona has published extensively on topics such as the social life of undocumented migrants, and the governance and internal life of Roma camps in Europe. (For more info on Dr Sigona, please see http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/staff/profiles/social-policy/sigona-nando.aspx). Peoples Campaign for the Right to Asylum in Sweden

The Swedish government during the fall 2015 drafted a number of proposals that will have a negative impact on refugees and migrants. Those unable to present valid identification documents will not be allowed to seek asylum in Sweden, those granted asylum will be given only temporary residence permits and most of them will be prevented from reuniting with their families. The Peoples Campaign for the Right to Asylum was initiated by various organizations as a means to join forces to protest against this deterioration of society.
