At Malm\u00f6 University on Thursday, March 1, a group of secondary school (gymnasium) students from Malm\u00f6 presented 25 research projects in a poster exhibition and semifinal for the Unga Forskare (in English: Young Researchers) national research competition. <\/strong>

Mohammed Al-Khushali<\/p><\/div>\n
Mohammed Al-Khushali from Malm\u00f6 Borgarskola was one of the finalists. In his project, Mohammed looked at the potential to produce biodiesel from vegetable oil.<\/p>\n
A jury comprised of Rickard du Rietz and Henrik Hartman at the Department of Materials Science and Applied Mathematics selected five finalists to represent the region in Stockholm March 20-23.<\/p>\n
Can you describe the Faculty\u2019s partnership with Unga Forskare?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Henrik Hartman<\/p><\/div>\n
Henrik:<\/strong> The organization Unga Forskare<\/a> arranges an annual national exhibition and competition where gymnasium students present their research projects. Malm\u00f6 University is since many years involved in the exhibition as jury. We also provide feedback and encourage further studies. It is a great opportunity to interact with potential students, including the ones participating in the competition and others coming to see the exhibition.<\/p>\n
Was it difficult to pick out the finalists and how did the jury evaluate the projects?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
Rickard:<\/strong> We appreciated the high quality level of the projects and the high scientific standard. There was a good mix between basic research and high relevance for societal challenges. Overall, it is always a delicate matter to select only a few projects out of many and this year was no exception. The final decision was based on the students\u2019 presentations in conjunction with their written reports and thorough discussions within the jury.<\/p>\n
What is the best part about speaking to young people about research and education within the fields of technology and natural science?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
Henrik:<\/strong> The fact that the students are so engaged with their projects and eager to learn.<\/p>\n
Was there a project that you specifically liked?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Rickard:<\/strong> We specifically like the good mix between basic research projects and the ones targeting specific challenges. All the participants share a dedication and willingness to learn more: We were also impressed with the high quality of the research methods they used.<\/p>\n
Do you have any tips or suggestions to people at Malm\u00f6 University who want to engage with prospective students?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
Henrik:<\/strong> Events such as this one are great opportunities to bring good potential students to the university campus and meet with existing students. Not only do the faculties have the opportunity to advertise their programs and courses, but also provide valuable feedback to the exhibitors by asking questions about their specific project and maybe even learn a thing or two.<\/p>\n
