By going from\u00a0\u201clearning with models\u201d to \u201clearning by modelling\u201d, we allow young students to create external representations of their mental\u00a0models of (scientific) phenomena to help them to concretise their ideas, to discuss and share them. Rather than working with\u00a0given models and representations, creating their own models engages students in richer activities and interactions. In this\u00a0presentation, I will show our approaches of \u201clearning by modelling\u201d based on the examples of various modelling tools and\u00a0experiences from empirical studies. The presentation will conclude with a hands-on demonstration of the presented\u00a0modelling tools. He\u00a0graduated (\u201cStaatsexamen\u201d, MSc. equivalent) in 2002 about the integration of visual modeling languages into the learning\u00a0environment Cool Modes. After graduation, he joined the Collide research group, lead by Prof. Dr. Hoppe, in the Department\u00a0of Computational and Cognitive Sciences at the University Duisburg-Essen.
