Inaugural lecture by Professor Holmström Olsson
All are welcome to attend the February 15 inaugural lecture by Professor Helena Holmström Olsson of the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology. The lecture, titled Digitalization Disrupts: Software, Data and AI, will be followed by a reception on Niagara’s 7th floor.
When and where:
Friday, February 15, at 13:15-14:00 in Niagara lecture hall B1. The lecture is followed by a reception at 14:00-15:00 on Niagara’s 7th floor.
Abstract:
Digitalization is rapidly transforming not only software-intensive companies but all companies and society at large. Typically, digitalization is understood as using software and data to offer significantly improved products, pure software products as well as digital and data-driven services with the intent to create new revenue opportunities and replace traditional business models with new business models. However, despite the many opportunities, most companies fail in building new core capabilities and they struggle with transitioning towards new digital ways-of-working. This talk explores the opportunities and challenges associated with digitalization. It also provides guidance on how to avoid disruption and instead reap the benefits of a transformation that we have only seen the beginning of.

Friday: Bio-inspired cognitive architecture and “Julskyltning”
AI-research and a Yule time research exhibition, here are a couple of interesting events happening on Campus this Friday afternoon.
Seminar on bio-inspired cognitive architecture
Magnus Johnsson, Senior Lecturer in computer science at the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology, is holding a seminar to talk about his ongoing research.
When and where:

Magnus Johnsson will give an introduction to himself and his wide research interests with a particular focus on the development of more general artificial cognitive architectures. Magnus’ approach is partly inspired by nature, which means that he seeks to model cognition/brains or parts of brains at a system level. His ultimate goal by doing this is to get as close as possible to realise AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), while along the way come up with new applicable algorithms/methods and simultaneously understand more about biological brains and natural cognition. More on Magnus Johnsson’s research.

Time to nominate candidates to the new Faculty Board
The mandate for the current Faculty Board is coming to an end and a new one will be elected. This coincides with Malmö University’s new university regulation (arbetsordning), which means that the Faculty Board will have a changed and expanded mandate. The new Faculty Board will be appointed for the term 2019-04-01 through 2022-03-31. All TS faculty staff may nominate members to the new board before December 11.

The nomination deadline is December 11, 2018. Suggestions, including name and a short description should be submitted through this online form or by paper through Sara Leckner’s internal mailbox. Nominations of several candidates can be made by submitting the form several times. As the total number of nominations for a candidate will guide and facilitate the work of appointing the new Faculty Board, the Nomination Committee asks that as many staff members as possible nominate their candidate(s).

- 6 teachers from TS of which one is an adjunct
- 1 teacher from another faculty at Malmö University
- 3 external members

- Dean
TS Faculty members will elect the first 3 categories, and the student board elects the student representatives.

- Basic education and advanced level incl. proposal to the Vice-Chancellor to set up and complete programs and main area at the basic and master level
- PhD Education, as well as proposals for the Vice-Chancellor to set up and discontinue research topics
- Training plans and syllabi for all levels of education
Requirements for Faculty Board members
The nominated internal members should:
- be permanent members of the Faculty of Technology and Society staff (at least 50% or for a certain period of time not shorter than two years from the beginning of the term of office);

A nominated member from another Malmö University faculty should be permanently employed (see above) as a teacher at that faculty and also have broad knowledge of TS’ interests and activities. Nomination of external members can be based on the candidate’s experience of leading strategic development work, which can be translated into the conditions that the work in TS’ faculty board implies.
