Australia welcomed us with lovely 29 degree weather when we landed yesterday evening — what a great start to our intensive week in Adelaide at Flinders University. \u00a0Barely 12 hours after landing here, we were picked up at 10:00 at our hotel by Bernie Fitzsimons, Career Development Consultant at Flinders University, and his wife Di. \u00a0We had no idea what we were in for when we stepped into their car; \u00a0what a fabulous first day we had.<\/p>\n

Stop one was the Woodstock Winery & Nature Sanctuary, where we met up with Verity Kingsmill, our main point of contact for this project. \u00a0What a perfect mix — feeding kangaroos and a wine tasting! \u00a0Did you know that baby kangaroos are called joeys? \u00a0We had the pleasure of meeting a joey while feeding his mamma. \u00a0After that amazing experience, we headed into the winery for a lovely wine tasting. \u00a0The Woodstock Wine Estate in McLaren Vale was named by\u00a0English settlers, after their\u00a0hometown of Woodstock. \u00a0The owner’s grandson, who is currently pursuing a bachelors degree in wine making at Adelaide University, was the wonderful young gentleman who served us.<\/p>\n

Stop two was Nina Tabor ’s house. \u00a0Nina is the Manager for the Career Development Office at Flinders University, and she invited us to her place for lunch. \u00a0When we arrived at Nina’s, her entire staff of 13 was already there to greet us. \u00a0We were taken aback by everyone’s friendly welcome, and the incredible setting of Nina’s home. \u00a0We ate a traditional Australian BBQ comprised of local lamb, venison, and side salads, all accompanied by the fabulous wine produced by her husband Phil. \u00a0Their property lies on an 18 acre vineyard where they grow and produce their own wines, thus the name of their winery, Eighteen Acres. \u00a0What a treat!<\/p>\n

Now we can’t forget to mention that the drive from hotel to winery, to Nina’s home, and back to hotel was one through gorgeous and lush nature, farm land, rolling hills, and the seaside. \u00a0We are now unwinding all of our impressions from our first day here, and it’s now time to catch up on some much needed sleep!<\/p>\n
