Day 2 at NMMU South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<h1 class=\"entry-title\"><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Get off your umtarara and make things happen! \u2013 Motto of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Another day at NMMU\u00a0filled with interesting meetings with committed people and stories about students making a difference, and the staff making\u00a0it\u00a0happen.<\/p>\n<p>This morning I spent some time at the Study Abroad Office with Mona Lisa Ndwayana and Jade Mentor who told me\u00a0about their hard work with orientation program for international students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6103.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-657\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-657\" src=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6103-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6103\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nLater I attended First Year Architecture student workshop presented by\u00a0Gino Frenchman, Academic Development Professional of the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Media. Afterwards we had some interesting discussions about the importance of first year experience for students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6120.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-659\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-659\" src=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6120-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6120\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6107.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-658\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-658\" src=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6107-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6107\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So exciting! \u00a0But no room\u00a0for reflection yet; I had to rush to my\u00a0next meeting, this time with Dr Jennifer Winstead, at the Higher Education Access and Development Services. She proudly presented her work\u00a0with\u00a0The Co-curricular Record, now official\u00a0document that\u00a0recognizes a student\u2019s out of classroom experiences.The co-curricular activities and recognition is verified by the relevant departments and the document can be used when applying for jobs and further studies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6122.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-660\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-660\" src=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6122-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6122\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My next meeting was with Kim Elliot, Senior Manager in Leadership Training and Development in Students Governance. I was really blown away with\u00a0Kim\u00b4s story and her passion for helping students. Among other things\u00a0Kim is\u00a0one of the facilitators behind\u00a0Beyond the Classroom (BtC) programme <a href=\"http:\/\/studev.nmmu.ac.za\/Leadership-Training-and-Development\/Leadership-Programme-Beyond-the-Classroom\">BtC<\/a> which started in 2009 as a voluntary leadership programme for students at NMMU. \u201dGet off your umtarara\u201d \u2013 an amazing story.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6125.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-661\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-661\" src=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6125-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6125\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6126.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-662\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-662\" src=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6126-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6126\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6135.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-663\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-663\" src=\"https:\/\/blogg.mah.se\/career\/files\/2016\/02\/IMG_6135-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6135\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I must admit I had a hard time leaving Kim but I had to attend another meeting this\u00a0late afternoon. This time with Dave Jenkings, Director of Centre for Access Assessment and research.\u00a0Although I was extremely tired, I was not\u00a0disappointed, and it was\u00a0thanks to Dave\u2019s warm reception and his interesting presentation.<\/p>\n<p>No energy left for sightseeing today either, unfortunately, but it was worth it!\u00a0I\u2019m sure I will sleep well tonight.
