This seminar focuses on a new approach to narrative and narrative design which deploys graphic\u00a0elements and design thinking strategies to arrive at \u2018hybrid\u2019 image\/texts. The visual literacy and communication methods of the design\u00a0field open up new\u00a0possibilities in\u00a0fiction, from structuring narratives in a formally designed way to creating moments\u00a0of emotional impact with well-timed visual or typographical surprises. The combination of text and\u00a0image-based narrative has implications for interactive works, graphic novels, games, and designed\u00a0novels. Zach Dodson has built a new Visual Communication Design masters curriculum\u00a0around the techniques and methodologies of hybrid works at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland.\u00a0The program is interdisciplinary as well as cross-cultural, creating a tinder box for new ideas.\u00a0There is also a new major in Information Design.
