Please join here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mau-se.zoom.us\/j\/8570893639.\">https:\/\/mau-se.zoom.us\/j\/8570893639.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below you can find an abstract for the seminar.<em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Joshka\nwill talk about her new book \u201cDocumenting Syria; Revolution, Filmmaking and\nVideo Activism\u201d recently published by IB Tauris\/Bloomsbury. Syria is now one of\nthe most important countries in the world for the international documentary\nfilm industry. The most recent Syria documentary film \u201cFor Sama\u201d is nominated\nfor the 2020 Oscars and has become the most BAFTA nominated documentary film\never. Since the 1970s, Syrian cinema masters played a defining role in\navant-garde filmmaking and political dissent against authoritarianism. After\nthe outbreak of violence in 2011, an estimated 500,000 video clips were\nuploaded making it one of the first YouTubed revolutions in history.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cDocumenting\nSyria\u201d is the very first history of documentary filmmaking in Syria. Based on\nextensive media ethnography and in-depth interviews with Syrian filmmakers in\nexile, the book offers an archival analysis of the documentary work by masters\nof Syrian cinema, such as Nabil Maleh, Ossama Mohammed, Mohammed Malas, Hala Al\nAbdallah, Hanna Ward, Ali Atassi and Omar Amiralay. Joshka traces how the works\nof these filmmakers became iconic for a new generation of filmmakers at the\nbeginning of the 21st century and maps the radical change in the documentary\nlandscape after the revolution of 2011.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>During\nher virtual booktalk, Joshka will screen exclusive and rarely seen film\nmaterial covering the history of Syrian documentary film from the 1970\u2019s until\ntoday.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to a K3 seminar with Joshka Wessels, Senior Lecturer in Communication for Development, K3.
