Shakespeare as Graphic Design

Graphic Design students (year two) have been assigned to work with Shakespeare and book covers, a series of three. During autumn, the students had a crash course about Shakespeare by Magnus Nilsson, professor in literature, and Sara Bjärstorp, head of department and senior lecturer in English Literature. Magnus and Sara gave the students three quotes for inspiration:

And thus I clothe my naked villany
With old odd ends stolen out of holy writ;
And seem a saint, when most I play the devil.

Richard III, Act I, scene 3

Reputation is an idle and most false imposition; oft got without merit, and lost without deserving.

Iago in Othello, Act II, scene 3

But manhood is melted into curtsies, valor into S
compliment, and men are only turned into tongue,
and trim ones, too. He is now as valiant as Hercules that only tells a lie and swears it. I cannot be a man with wishing; therefore I will die a woman with grieving.

Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, Act IV, scene 1

This week the students presented their work in the form of a book fair. Magnus and Sara were invited again to see the result and give feedback to the students’ work.

Porträtt i form av en ram

The first year Graphic Design students have been assigned to interview each other and interpret the information visually in form of a frame. You can see the result at Malmö University Libary (Orkanen).

Where: White Box, Orkanen
When: 2016-09-15 – 2016-10-06

Greetings from MIIETL Summer Institute

Christel Brost and Graphic Design students Evelina Kramsu and Sissel Braekhus are now at the Summer Institute dealing with ‘Students as Partners in learning and teaching in higher education’ organised by the McMaster Institute for Innovation and Enhancement in Teaching and Learning (MIIETL), Canada.

Together with Malmö University pro vice-chancellor Cecilia Christersson and Patricia Staaf, director of Centre for Teaching and Learning, they are taking part in a three-day ‘Change Institute’ supporting the implementation of a Students-as-Partners initiative.

The Graphic Design programme has for some years been working with projects with stakeholders outside the university to develop the students’ skills as change agents while also engaging students in curriculum development. The students consider themselves as partners both to stakeholders and the University.

The overall aim for Malmö University with the visit to MIIETL is to further develop a model of students as partners in learning and teaching that can be transferred to other programmess as well as to strengthen the Graphic Design programme.
