Under 2014 kommer urbanhistorisk forskning att synas i samband med flera internationella konferenser. Det gäller både konferenser som arrangeras av urbanhistoriska nätverk och konferenser som riktar sig till andra grupper av historiker, men där urban historia ofta har en stark position.
Först ut är ESSHC (European Social Science History conference), som denna gång arrangeras i Wien 23-26 april. ESSHC arrangeras vartannat år, och det är nu tionde gången som denna stora konferens äger rum. Hur mycket folk som kommer i år vet vi ju inte, men antalet deltagare är vanligen mer än 1500.
“The IISH organizes the ESSHC once every two years. The conference does not have a central theme and welcomes papers about all periods and subjects. The main objective of the conference is to introduce historians who use the insights and techniques from the social sciences to social scientists that focus on the past in their research and vice versa. The conference is advised by the Advisory Board.”
Urbanhistoriska perspektiv brukar inte saknas – i år märks i det preliminära programmet bland annat sessioner på följande teman:
- Urban Memory, Language and the Social History of Politics (15th-17th Centuries)
- Migration and Migrant Communities in 18th and 19th Century Central European Cities
- Gender, Sexuality and the City

Till sommaren kan man lämpligen bege sig till Guimarães (Portugal), för att besöka WCEH (World Congress of Environmental History) som arrangeras där 8-12 juli. Detta är endast andra gången denna världskongress anordnas, förra gången skedde detta faktiskt i Malmö/Köpenhamn 2009!
“The theme of the Congress, ‘Environmental History in the Making’, aims to create synergy among all scholars engaged in environmental history, to fathom the reach of the field and to investigate its focus areas and theoretical underpinnings. In line with the aims of ICEHO, the broad objective is to foster international communication and collaboration, to share information and disseminate research and to discuss issues, concerns and challenges relevant to the field. Thus, for the second time environmental historians from all over the world – senior academics and young scholars – with different disciplinary backgrounds will meet in a global forum to further the development of environmental history world-wide.”
Det preliminära programmet kommer att publiceras först i januari 2014, men erfarenheten från förra konferensen var att urbana perspektiv har fått allt större betydelse inom miljöhistorisk forskning, och att en äldre tradition med fokus på naturskydd och “naturskyddare” spelar allt mindre roll.

Om man trivs i Portugal kan man faktiskt med fördel stanna kvar några månader – EAUH (European Association for Urban History) ordnar nämligen konferens i Lissabon, 3-6 september, på temat ‘Cities in Europe, cities in the world’.
“The European Association for Urban History encourages cross-disciplinary and international research on urban history. Therefore the Association invites you to submit sessions that are as comparative and interdisciplinary as possible. Furthermore, we give priority to sessions, which are co-organised by scholars from different universities / countries.”
